From the moment the show begins, Barnum’s world bursts into colour and excitement. Fire eaters, stilt walkers, acrobatics, opera, and even Tom Thumb — it has everything you’d hope for, and it absolutely lives up to the Barnum name.

Matt Rawle (Cabaret, Evita, Les Mis) shines in the lead role, giving the performance of his life. Warm, charismatic and mischievous, he breaks the fourth wall with ease and instantly wins over the audience. Even when Barnum’s ambition leads him astray — including his infatuation with the Swedish opera singer — Rawle’s charm keeps you firmly on his side. Monique Young is a wonderful Charity, grounding Barnum with strength and warmth. Together, they chart his twisting journey of dreams, schemes and spectacular reinvention.

Barnum may be famous for “humbug” — embellishing the truth for the sake of wonder — and this production embraces that spirit wholeheartedly. The oldest woman isn’t really 164, the smallest man isn’t truly a general, but the audience wants the magic, and Barnum certainly delivers it. Charity keeps his wilder ideas in check, but together they are a force to be reckoned with.

For me, the ensemble is the beating heart of the show. This extraordinarily talented group of actor‑musicians, acrobats and circus performers fills every moment with energy, skill and joy.

Cy Coleman’s iconic score shines throughout, with classics including Join the Circus, Colours of My Life, Come Follow the Band and Love Makes Such Fools of Us All. I especially enjoyed Black and White and One Brick at a Time.

If the first half dazzles, the second half astonishes. The acrobatics — performed with no safety net — are breathtaking, and Matt Rawle’s high tightrope walk is a genuine jaw‑dropper. More than once, I found myself covering my mouth in awe.

This production of Barnum is spectacular, magical and full of wonder. You honestly need this show in your life.
